New Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar

will arrive in 2019, with a bespoke 6.5-litre V12 Cosworth engine and hybrid system

Aston Martin has announced its AM-RB 001 hypercar will be called the Aston Martin Valkyrie when first deliveries of the vehicle start in 2019.

The new name for the AM-RB 001, which is being developed by Aston Martin with input from Red Bull Racing F1 designer Adrian Newey, continues Aston’s tradition of giving its cars names beginning with the letter ‘V’. The Vantage badge started the lineage, when it was applied to a DB2 back in 1951.

In Norse mythology, the Valkyrie are female figures who select who may live and who may die in battle.

Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, said, “Aston Martin model names have deep meaning. They need to inspire and excite. The Aston Martin Valkyrie is an incredibly special car that demands an equally remarkable name; an uncompromising car that leaves nothing in reserve. The connotations of power and honour, of being chosen by the Gods, are so evocative, and so pertinent to a car that only a fortunate few will ever experience.”

Aston Martin Valkyrie gets Cosworth power
The Valkyrie will be powered by a bespoke Cosworth-built 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine. The unit will also be paired with a ‘lightweight hybrid battery system’ expected to take shape as a KERS boost system like that on current Formula One cars.

The 6.5-litre V12 engine, which will feature in all 150 road-going versions of the Valkyrie, will be paired with a seven-speed paddle-shift gearbox designed and manufactured by Ricardo. All models, however, have all been sold at an estimated £2million each. First deliveries will begin in 2019.
